Facebook I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down

I’m Chelsea, and I’m a millennial. Much like the ‘hipster’ label often thrown at me, I try to resist this millennial moniker, but deep down I know it’s true. I can be highly impulsive, I have a profound feeling that ‘the man’ and ‘the system’ are not for me, I’m determined to change the world and travel, without sacrificing the luxuries to which my privileged upbringing has made me grow accustomed. Perhaps, above all else, I want to live a life worth instagramming. And facebooking. And filming and tweeting and periscoping – I want to share it all, and I really want the double tap.

Even as I write this, I realize how ridiculous it sounds. Do I truly identify as someone so committed to creating a life that fits into a square box? Does it matter to me whether the girl who I completed an internship program with sophomore year doesn’t like any of my Facebook posts? Of course it does, because though we weren’t friends, and I know nothing of her non-shared life, she works at Teen Vogue, and her life is so much more likeable than mine.

As a result of the above musings, and so many more, I’m committing to a social media detox. I’m not claiming to be the first to do it – sites likeMashable, Refinery29 and Huffington Post have gone here before – and I certainly won’t be the last. But if you’re interested, I’d love to have you read along, and maybe even join me or a little solidarity.

I’m seven days in at this moment, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t still struggling. On day one, I realized that my Spotify is linked to my Facebook. I’d already deactivated my account – see the guilt trip they throw at you for trying to leave below. And that was before the phantom instagramming kicked in. No, I didn’t daydream about posting, but when I came into the office to find Christmas presents from my bosses on my desk? I took a picture intending to post it. When I got a new package of goodies in the mail? Went to ‘gram it. And when I was preparing to teach my weekend yoga classes, I got as far as opening my browser and typing in ‘fac’ to request that people join me before remembering my detox.


I’ve done a Facebook detox before, and in theory I knew what I was getting myself into. So why, dare I ask, am I having such disconnection discomfort?


Constant connection can drive feelings of FOMO (fear of missing out), pressure us to never stop working, and even spark anxiety or depression. 10 p.m. work emails, anyone? According to an exploration on the psychology of social media by the scheduling app Buffer, social media affects two major chemicals in the brain – dopamine and oxytocin.

Dopamine causes seeking behavior, triggering us to want, desire, seek out, and search. It increases our general level of arousal and our goal-directed behavior – supercritical stuff when you think back to our neanderthal ancestors, who needed to search for essentials like food, water and shelter. Today, many of us in the west have the resources to meet those basic needs, so we fill our desire to seek with other sources of information: enter social media. Finding out what your work frenemy had for lunch? Dopamine. Seeing your ex’s photos ice skating with their new partner, and their new puppy? Dopamine. Each time we find more information, we’re incentivized to keep scrolling, keep clicking until we can get our next fix – and that’s before you throw in oxytocin.

Known by many as the love hormone, oxytocin is released when you hug or kiss. Apparently, chilling on your social networks can up oxytocin levels too; a study by Dr. Paul J. Zak, a professor at Claremont Graduate University, showed that after 10 minutes of tweeting, oxytocin levels can spike by over 13 percent.

From a Fast Company article written by the subject of this experiment:

“That’s equivalent to the hormonal spike experienced by the groom at the wedding Zak attended [earlier that summer]. Meanwhile, stress hormones cortisol and ACTH went down 10.8 percent and 14.9 percent, respectively. Zak explains that the results are linked, that the release of oxytocin I experienced while tweeting reduced my stress hormones.”

If I had to guess, I’d imagine you’re thinking, this sounds great, I get to tap into my primal need to search and discover, while decreasing stress and increasing the love hormone. Sign me up! And to an extent, you’re right. Social media can be a fantastic tool – hell I wouldn’t be writing this post right now if it weren’t for Instagram. However, as Robert Palmer tells us, you might as well face it you’re addicted to… social media.

I’m always a little curious just how addicted to technology I am– sure I get those phantom vibrations, and I catch myself reaching for my phone the moment my brunch partner heads to the restroom, but that’s normal, right? Sure, for a social media addict. I try to resist the urge, but oftentimes it’s so second nature that I don’t notice I’m stuck in a scrolling hole until it’s too late.

This isn’t my first rodeo with signing off from social. The longest I went without a Facebook was about 15 months, between my sophomore and senior years of college. It took a while to get ‘clean,’ but once I did it was such a relief. No more obsessing over a friend’s thigh being thinner than mine, not having the coolest and most recent vacation photos, and no more feeling guilty about turning down invites to events I don’t want to go to.

I found myself more present and focused on those in my immediate presence, and more concerned with taking time to reach out to my true close friends. The pressure to have to speak to someone to learn about their life was really lovely, and I am looking forward to getting back there again.

I have not set a time limit for this particular detox. I’ve already realized that I’ll have to kick Facebook back on this week for temporary contributor purposes, and I have to keep it active if I want to continue using Spotify. I’ve got an uphill battle this time around – eliminating Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is going to be a long road. But I’m excited to get unplugged, and even more pumped to be able to share my journey with the Folk Rebellion.

Get Unplugged: The Why and The What

The power of choice, of having options, is addictive. Just look to any of the countless articles about how millennials are all riddled with outlandish expectations of choice.

We’ve grown up with endless information at our fingertips (literally), and now expect the world to be our oyster as we morph into so-called adulthood.

From designing a freelance career to avoid working for “the man”, to negotiating a way to travel the world while still paying the bills, to expecting food choices left and right delivered to our door without leaving our couch in twenty minutes or less, the modern human does expect a lot. And in turn, the more we’re exposed to choice, the more those options become addictive.

I wrote a bit about the addictive nature of information seeking in my poston the social media detox I’m currently undergoing. In short, research has seen that social media affects our dopamine levels. Dopamine causes seeking behavior, triggering us to want, desire, search, and increasing our general level of arousal and our goal-directed behavior. Dopamine serves to drive us to search for resources to meet our basic needs – think food, water and shelter – but these days it can also push seeking behavior online.

Have you ever gotten online – whether on your phone, tablet, or computer – to Google one quick thing only to resurface 30 minutes, maybe even hours later? I call these internet K-holes, which will make sense to anyone who has ever seen what someone on too much Ketamine looks like. We’ve become addicted to the availability of information, and the chemicals in our brains are steering us along that path.

To put into perspective just how addicted we are, I created my own internet K-hole courtesy of Pew Research. Some numbers I dug up:

So we use our phones to avoid human connection, allow them to make us feel sometimes happy and productive, sometimes distracted and frustrated, and look at them as something we can’t live without.

This data pulls largely from cellphones, sure, but it’s indicative of a bigger addiction to information, as well as a fear of boredom and the unknown. Just think of what might happen if you unplug during the first week of 2016. You may meet a new friend during your hungover coffee run on New Year’s Day, or maybe you’ll be struck with inspiration and kick off the year with a killer poem/painting/photo/outfit/other creative thing. Or maybe you’ll just finally finish that book that’s been sitting on your bedside table throughout 2015, and that’s pretty badass too.

So this New Year, maybe swap your Instagram filters for a disposable camera, and leave the laptops, cell phones, and tablets tucked away. After all, Netflix will still be there tomorrow to nurse you through your resolutions hangovers.

Black Friday Remix

A bit of a throw back Thursday today, tounnamed-1 last week when I got to visit The Whitney Plantation museum.
Originally known as Habitation Haydel, is located less than an hour from New Orleans in Louisiana. Several years ago, the Whitney Plantation was turned into a museum dedicated to preserving and memorializing the lives of
the slaves who lived on and built that plantation themselves, as well as those throughout the South. I was horrified to learn that this is the only such museum in the United States.

The bulk of plantation museums focus on farming and life as a white person on the plantation, glossing over the grizzly past the built plantation life.


The museum hosts wonderfully rich, moving tours daily. If you’re ever in the New Orleans area, I would highly recommend taking a few hours to make it out to this spot. Be sure to get tickets in advance, as the tours usually sell out.

First Thoughts – Influenster

Happy Friday, folks!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 8.31.25 PM.pngSo I don’t anticipate making this spot a platform for reviews, but I had to share some thoughts on my first experience with Influenster. My boss is a big fan of these guys, and I was curious as to what the hype was all about.

I received full sizes of SoapBox shampoo and conditioners, Good Health veggie straw snacks, nail polish, Boots Organics day time moisturizer, boot insoles and yogi tea samples. All for – wait for it – FREE!

So sure, I’m supposed to share my thoughts on the products on Influenster. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, right? Photo on 12-3-15 at 7.56 PM.jpg

All in all, Influenster is a super cool concept and I’d highly recommend checking it out. These veggie straws and Boots moisturizer are great, but I promise I won’t bombard y’all with product reviews in the name of me getting more free stuff. Holiday Blues

Happy post-Thanksgiving! For me, today is the Sunday post Thanksgiving, as I took Monday off to avoid holiday traffic heading home. And much as I appreciate having time off, getting to travel for fun instead of work and the privileges I have that allowed me to enjoy the past few days, I’m a little bit down.

It’s that dreary, have to go back to work and reality feeling that always gets me feeling a little glum after the holidays. Spending time with family makes it even worse, because as we’ve gotten older we’ve all spread out, so it seems now that holidays are the only time we get to catch up and hang out, which I absolutely adore. Again, I am very privileged in that I get to enjoy these things. I get paid vacation and holiday days, my bosses cover for me when I take days off so I really don’t have to work, etc.

I spent turkey day in New Orleans, LA with my father. He recently moved out to Arizona, and as I’m on the East Coast we needed a good half way point. We both love NOLA and the Air Bnb rates were great, so we decided to go for it. As it’s only about a 5 1/2 hour drive, I made the trek in my little Mazda 3 instead of flying, and therefore had an awful lot of audio time to fill in my 11+ hours of driving.

A friend and coworker introduced me to Mavenly.co  not too long ago, and I’ve become enamored with their content. I devoured perhaps 6-8 hours of podcasts, combing through their archives and constantly finding new inspiration and dozens of women I want to learn more about and work with. The last podcast on my drive touched a little bit on content creation, focusing on the line between creating content just for the sake of creating and creating content because you’re really fired up and excited to write a new post.

Well, the general consensus was that when you’re new, it’s best to force yourself to write regularly. I kind of knew that already – it’s a lot of what NaNoWriMo is all about – but hearing it discussed was just the kick in the pants I needed to put together a post today. That is why I’m drafting a stream of consciousness post for the evening. I have some cool ideas for posts moving forward, but they need to be better thought out and researched, and I am just not feeling up to a labor intensive post.

Hope everyone Stateside had a fantastic Thanksgiving, filled without too much consumerism pressures or overfilled bellies, lots of laughs and fun with family, and perhaps a couple Cyber Monday thrills that you’ll love gifting over the next month.

Hello, World


So, I’ve decided to make the commitment to a blog. We’ll see if I stick to it – at this point in my life another line item on my to do list really seems like the last thing that I need to do.

But, at the same time, I’ve been told by more than person, and more than once by each, that I need to start a blog. I figured hey, the worst that happens is I get back into a writing habit and no one ever reads my stuff.

Still deciding what exactly I want this space to be. For those of you who don’t know me, I have developed many passionate interests, not all of which lend themselves to a cohesive blog. Or life, for that matter!

I’m a 200 hr. certified yoga teacher, a pretty decent pr professional (if I do say so myself), a fitness enthusiast, unofficial life-coach, human rights advocate and more. I’m thinking I’ll just start writing my thoughts here, and see where that takes me. If you’re reading, please feel free to leave me thoughts, comments, whatever you like! As long, of course, as it’s positive. I’ve dealt with the whole cyber bullying thing, and I’m not having it.

Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue’s Weekend Makeover

et ready to eat your heart out at the 39th annual Atlantic Antic street fair. Sunday, September 29th from noon until 6 p.m. New York City’s largest street fair will be taking over ten blocks of Atlantic Ave. from Hicks St. down to Fourth Ave. in Brooklyn. The event will feature over 600 vendors, with everything from local restaurants and stores to crafts, fashion, food, and more.

The annual Atlantic Antic street festival is presented by the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC). Founded in 1974, the AALDC is a non-profit organization that strives to “further economic development, historic preservation, and cultural enrichment in the greater Atlantic Avenue area,” according to the organization’s website. Linking the neighborhoods of Cobble Hill, Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights, the AALDC provides information, advocacy and other services to promote the preservation of some prime New York history.

As is traditional of street fairs everywhere, the Atlantic Antic will host a wide variety of food, from the swanky and savory to the sinfully delicious funnel cake. With 39 years of tradition backing this event, a number of repeat booths will appear. Brooklyn-based Waterfront Alehouse, Table 87 Coal Oven Pizza, Red Hook Lobster Pound and more will be in attendance serving up delicious eats. Sixpoint Brewery will be at the Antic serving their annual Antic Amber, brewed special for this event. And the Antic will welcome newcomer Free Range Wine to the festival this year. Free Range will be serving up a variety of over 200 fine wines.

After you fill up on Antic food and drink be sure to stop by one of the festival’s 12 stages to see some great performances. With an array of musical options, you’ll be able to pick your favorite genre from country to reggae to dance the afternoon away. A Kid’s Block is also planned, and will be located between Boerum St. and Smith St. with face painting and pony rides for younger attendees.

International Center of Photography Triennial Exhibit’s Final Weekend

2013-09-18 10.58.48The International Center of Photography’s third Triennial Exhibit will conclude its run Sunday. The exhibit, titled A Different Kind of Order, features work from 28 artists across the world addressing current social, economic and political issues.

Since its inception in 2003 the ICP Triennial exhibits have looked at the progressive developments of photography, video, and other multimedia visual representations of diverse subjects. Past exhibits have tended to focus on current social issues. The works that make up A Different Kind of Order continue this vision with pieces that explore “the new visual and social territory in which image making operates today,” the ICP says.

Artists used many different mediums to explore their subjects. According to the Institute, “A Different Kind of Order focuses on artworks created in our current moment of widespread economic, social, and political instability.” Spanning the ground and first floors, the exhibit features photography, video, digitally modified and compiled images, and more multimedia pieces. A café offering wholesome snack options also occupies the ground floor.

2013-09-18 11.14.51-3Hito Steyerl, one of the 28 contributing artists, works predominantly with video. Her work is featured in a darkened room at the ICP, where visitors can rest for a moment on one of the room’s benches. The work displayed attempts to investigate “the constant slippage between visual truth and fiction.”

Another artist, Sohei Nishino, has two pieces from his Diorama Maps series on display. Nishino’s work explores different experiences of cities worldwide. He spends roughly a month exploring his subjects, taking photos all across the city then hand cutting and arranging the negatives into experiential maps. The image below shows the downtown portion of Nishino’s map of New York. Nishino’s map of Tokyo is also on display.

2013-09-18 11.31.31Additional subjects explored include the social implications of natural disaster increases global warming, a series documenting the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan in 2011 and many more.

The exhibition will close Sunday, Sept. 22. The International Center of Photography is located at 1133 Sixth Ave., New York. The Center is open Friday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
